In March 1966, the striking Delano farmworkers undertook a 300 mile march to Sacramento, the state’s capitol, to promote their cause. The theme of the march was: pilgrimage, penitence, and revolution.

Luis Valdez and Agustin Lira founded El Teatro Campesino in the months following the September 1965 Delano Grape Strike. The group performed from the union hall stage at the Friday night union meetings and from a flat-bed truck every night during the March to Sacramento. El Teatro traveled to college campuses near and far, promoting the cause of the striking farmworkers.

For many decades, California agribusiness, the state’s largest industry, was built with a cheap, immigrant farm labor system, mostly Mexican. During a farm labor strike, the growers imported cheap labor from Mexico to break the strike; the DiGiorgio Corporation was no exception.

Convincing strikebreakers to leave their job and sign union authorization cards with the National Farm Workers Association was a daily task for the striking farmworkers who manned the picket lines adjacent to the grape fields. This video clip shows how difficult and how dramatic that effort could be.
